Dom McKay has been inside the heart of Celtic for almost four months- last night his first major mistake was on show.

The stands were full but seeing the return of supporters as an economic opportunity in keeping with the Tory Government was a serious own goal by Celtic’s new CEO.

McKay was billed as a people person, someone that understood the market with a strong focus on customer relations. Last night those sentiments looked like a box ticking exercise.

Behind the banners were ordinary supporters, almost all of them paid £600 last season for a stream of dubious quality and being patronised. Some paid that amount two or three times over in their household.

Almost all renewed in an act ranging from blind faith to desperation, possibly against their better judgement. A cold hard look at the facts would have came down on the side of watching from afar but supporting a football club doesn’t involve facts. That is left for accountants.

McKay can redeem the situation to a degree with the pricing of Wednesday’s Europa League Play Off against Alkmaar, Celtic are guaranteed European football till Christmas with the Conference the worst case scenario.

Charging £10 for Wednesday’s match, the third non Season Ticket match in seven days will earn McKay some goodwill, we’ll soon discover if he has a heart and pulse or if his two and a half months shadowing Peter Lawwell left him forever scarred.
