Celtic are exploring a move for James MCarthy according to Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail.

The 30-year-old is a free agent which should make negotiations slightly easier with a direct deal with the player required to complete a contract.

McCarthy has been linked with Celtic at various times since leaving Hamilton in 2009.

In the Mail McGowan explains:

Celtic are exploring a move for Republic of Ireland midfielder James McCarthy. Consistently linked with the Parkhead club in recent years the 30-year-old is a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer. A boyhood Celtic fan former Wigan and Everton midfielder McCarthy has 43 caps for Ireland.

Midfield seems like one of the areas that Celtic currently have some cover in but after losing Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham things are stretched at the moment with Ryan Christie out of contract in five months time.

McCarthy hasn’t been a regular in the EPL since breaking his leg in January 2018, over two seasons at Crystal Palace he has played 2,489 minutes the equivalent of just under 28 EPL matches.

At the age of 30 the midfielder still has a few good seasons ahead of him but Celtic are likely to face competition from English sides for his signing.
