It was only 30 minutes against a team from the Championship but Liam Scales made the most of introducing himself to the Celtic support.

Remarkably the Irishman became the fifth player to turn out at left-back in Celtic’s last four matches. Greg Taylor was replaced by Adam Montgomery against Ross County, Josip Juranovic took over away to Real Betis with Boli Bolingoli coming in from Siberia to play against Livingston.

Scales joined Celtic a couple of days before the transfer window closed, at the age of 23 he is at the high end of the scale for projects and too old to learn his trade with the B team in the Lowland League.

Playing as a left-sided centre-back Scales caught the attention of Celtic with his performances for Shamrock Rovers. Carl Starfelt, Stephen Welsh and Cameron Carter-Vickers have been sharing two places in the side recently but left-back seems vacant at the moment while Taylor recovers from surgery.

While his striking options are highly limited Ange Postecoglou has a few options at left-back with strong competition for that role when he selects his side to face Dundee United on Sunday.
