Anton McElhone has announced his appointment as Celtic’s Head of Sports Science on his LinkedIn profile.
Interestingly he has a UEFA A licence and has recently been assistant manager to David Hopkin at Bradford City and Morton.
With an understanding of sports science and football management he would seem to be an ideal appointment although nothing has yet been confirmed from Celtic.
One of the highlights on McElhone’s CV is 10 years at Spurs as Fitness and Conditioning Coach. That ended in December 2017 when he moved to the MLS to become assistant coach at New England Revolution.
More recently he has worked with David Hopkin as assistant manager at Bradford City and Morton, since leaving the Greenock side in March of this year he has been without a club.
Having a fully staffed and functioning Sports Science department is essential for any club but led by someone who’s last three jobs have all been coaching adds some intrigue to McElhone’s move to Celtic.
