Celtic made the late night transfer watch worthwhile by securing Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan from Spurs just before the transfer window closed.

Earlier in the day the signings of Jota and Georgios Giakoumakis had been announced with many fans expecting that to be the end of business till January.

Beyond Stephen Welsh and Carl Starfelt there didn’t appear to be many central defensive options open to Ange Postecoglou but the arrival on loan of Carter-Vickers changes the situation dramatically.

The American international had been linked with Celtic during the final day of the window but the trail seemed to go cold with Spurs pushing for a permanent move rather than the loan that interested Celtic.

At 11pm the English window closed ruling out deals with Newcastle or Norwich, Celtic had 60 minutes to do business and used that time efficiently to snap up the American internationalist.

Last season Carter-Vickers impressed on loan at Bournemouth with five other loan spells making up his Tottenham career.

With Liam Scales and Josip Jurnanovic signed up over the last fortnight Postecoglou now has the sort of depth and options needed for the demanding programme ahead of domestic and Europa League fixtures.

Although he was born in Southend, Carter-Vickers has played six times for the USA after playing at u-18, u-20 and u-23 level.
