Kevin Kilbane has taken Pat Nevin to task over his flippant reaction to the racist abuse of John McGinn at Stamford Bridge.

The Aston Villa player looked unsettled as he was greeted with a tirade of abuse as he rushed a corner during his side’s 3-0 defeat from Chelsea.

Nevin likes to portray himself as an equality campaigner but spent the longest past of his career with Chelsea during the eighties when their racism problems were at their most public.

Success and the contribution of players such as Didier Drogba took the spotlight off the attitude of a section of fans although anti-Semitic problems have been called out by Roman Abramovich.

At half-time during the 2011 Scottish Cup Final Nevin announced himself as an anti-sectarian campaigner, eight years later UEFA twice closed parts of Ibrox due to racist chanting during Europa League qualifiers.

These days Nevin rarely features in the Scottish media. BBC Five Live and Chelsea TV seem to be the main outlets to call on his expertise.

Kilbane is a former international team-mate of James Maclean.
