Last night was a time for one of the biggest charity fund-raisers in the UK.

Soccer Aid brings football and showbiz together, a light-hearted charity match at the Etihad where the celebs show that they can play a bit and the former pros try to demonstrate that they haven’t lost too much.

It is taken seriously but not too seriously, charity is the only winner with £13m raised on the night for a variety of good causes.

The event is an annual highlight for Martin Compston, he hasn’t done too badly since his playing career at Aberdeen and Morton fizzled out as the world of acting opened up.

Most folk watching Soccer Aid take it for what it is but with an incredible siege mentality around those at Ibrox some couldn’t keep their anger and poison to themselves. Seeing Compston and his number 67 shirt seemed in some twisted way to be an act of provocation.

One camera capturing a racist march being escorted by police officers through the centre of Glasgow is another unwelcome intrusion into the mindset of ‘King Billy’ and his like.

Police Scotland have arrested and charged eight people in connection with the race hate march, apparently much more are expected to be charged.

Rather than try to keep quiet to let the spotlight move on Ibrox fans are raging against the gentle questions being asked about their support and last Sunday’s excesses.

With half a million Twitter followers Compston tweet was viewed way belong the self-proclaimed ‘best wee country in the world’.
