Jonathan Afolabi’s challenging start to the season continued with the lunchtime announcement that David Hopkin had left his job as manager of the club.

The Celtic striker moved on loan to Somerset Park on August 2 but a month into the move he’ll find Jim Duffy as caretaker while Ayr look for their third manager this year.

Afolabi has had a miserable time of it, in five substitute appearances he has yet to score, missed a penalty in the shoot-out defeat from Dundee United in the Premier Sports Cup then got sent off on Tuesday against Raith Rovers 16 minutes after coming off the bench.

That defeat seems to have brought things to a head for Hopkin who has previously quit Livingston and Morton from apparently strong positions.

Ayr do have one point from this season, enough to keep them above Dunfermline where Peter Grant is feeling the pressure from four Championship defeats.

Hopkin took over at Ayr in March after Mark Kerr was sacked, during the summer he brought in Duffy as his assistant.
