Nothing to prove- surprise verdict from Celtic’s goal hero

Albian Ajeti’s confidence seems undentedby his nightmare debut season at Celtic.

The Swiss striker made a favourable early impact with five SPFL goals before being injured at the end of September last year while scoring against Hibs.

From that point on Ajeti drifted further and further out on contention with just one more goal as Celtic’s season collapsed.

After failing to make any impact in a season with West Ham Ajeti wasn’t even a contender for Switzerland’s European Championship squad but a strange set of circumstances presented the 24-year-old with a starting spot at home to Ross County.

Debuts for Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota were the main focus of attention yesterday but with Kyogo unlikely to play this month and Georgios Giakoumakis working on his fitness the door opened for Ajeti.

Two second half headers secured the points to build on Celtic’s impressive home form, after the match Ajeti told The Sun:

If we have the chances then I’ll score the goals. I had nothing to prove because I’ve been training very well and working hard every day. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. If I play and get starts in games then I will score.

We play with high intensity and high pressing where we create many chances and we will score lots of goals. It doesn’t matter who scores but if we have the chances then I’ll be there to score the goals.

I’m happy about any start I can get at Celtic. The performance was important for us and we performed as well as we have for the last couple of weeks. We did a lot well today in what was a tough game and I’m happy to help the team with goals.

Before yesterday Ajeti had only played 10 minutes of SPFL football, coming off the bench to replace Odsonne Edouard in the 6-0 win over St Mirren.
