Leigh Griffiths is in line for an SFA disrepute charge after booting a firework into a stand of St Johnstone fans during Dundee’s Premier Sports Cup defeat from St Johnstone last night.

The on-loan Celtic striker was abused and jeered throughout the game by the away fans but there are no excuses for kicking a flare/firework into a stand with supporters.

It was Griffiths’ third match since moving to Dens Park, with Dundee failing to score in either game the pressure is clearly growing on the 31-year-old to deliver.

The incident will be included in the report from the match delegate with SFA disciplinary rules open to a wide range of punishments.

Although Griffiths hasn’t been involved in an incident like this before with the scrutiny on football from the Government and Police he could be in line for a hefty suspension.

The striker may have been on the wrong end of abuse from St Johnstone fans but that will increase significantly if he plays on Saturday when Steven Gerrard takes his side to Dens Park.

  • Neil Smith says:

To be fair I think he was simply intending to clear it off the field of play a wee bit. No way he meant or expected that hit as he hasn’t connected so sweetly with a shot in 3 years…

What happens to the person who throw it on the field first.
    Then deal with the player.
    It’s always the players fault.
    Why.

  • Stev says:

They will ban him from Saturdays game coz hes a certainty to score against that mob.
