Last season he finished the top scorer in Eredivisie, finishing off with a consolation strike away to Ajax on May 13.

VVV Venlo lost that match 3-1 and were already relegated but the future seemed pretty certain for Giorgos Giakoumakis who scored 26 goals despite the struggles of his side.

It took five months for the Greek striker to score his next goal but against St Johnstone he impressed a critical audience- one that has been fed a steady stream of dud strikers since Mo Bangura announced that Celtic were his stepping stone to the EPL, others followed.

After two uneventful substitute displays Giakoumakis looked the part when he came off the bench last Tuesday against Ferencvaros, that display earned him a start against St Johnstone.

Ten minutes from half-time he smashed in his first Celtic goal. Tony Ralston pounced on a slip by Callum Booth, fired the ball across the six yard line with Giakoumakis instinctively rifling the ball into the net.

The new bhoy is off and running, Celtic have doubled their striking options.
