With his employers in action at noon today Jermain Defoe headed 240 miles south to Manchester to pick up a lucrative match fee from Sky Sports.

While Steven Gerrard’s side toiled to 2-1 win over St Mirren their veteran striker was more concerned with events at The London Stadium where West Ham enjoyed a 1-0 win over Spurs.

While the second half was raging on in Paisley Defoe was sitting alongside Graeme Souness inside Old Trafford previewing the action involving two of his former clubs.

It was to be a long afternoon for the Ibrox player-coach, once the West Ham game was over attention switched to the main event- Manchester United v Liverpool.

Why Defoe was chosen to share his thoughts on that match are something of a mystery. With Souness batting for the visitors Roy Keane or another former Manchester United figure would have been perfect to debate the issues with.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher joined Martin Tyler in the commentary box as the visitors pushed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closer to the exit door.
