Albian Ajeti has been recalled to the Swiss international squad for next week’s World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Lithuania.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s recent injury led to Ajeti getting a run in the Celtic side but after scoring three times against Ross County and Real Betis he failed to score in his next three and was dropped to the bench for last night’s defeat from Bayer Leverkusen.

The website of the Swiss national side reports:

There are also Albian Ajeti from Europa League participant Celtic Glasgow and Cedric Itten from Bundesliga promoted Greuther Furth, who last belonged to the “Nati” circle in September and October 2020, respectively. “With them and the other returnees, we have more and new options for the two upcoming games,” commented Murat Yakin on the choice.

After starting his Celtic career with a raft of goals injuries and a loss of form set in with Ajeti missing from the Swiss squad that reached the last eight of the European Championships during the summer.

Against Ross County and Real Betis there were signs that Ajeti could be a useful part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad but his miss from inside the six-yard box against Dundee United summed up his most recent performances.

Last night Giorgos Giakoumakis made his Celtic debut which provides Postecoglou with three striking options with Kyogo the clear first pick.

Switzerland are at home to Northern Ireland next Saturday then travel to face Lithuania three days later.
