That’s horrendous, a red card- Watch the Bevis Mugabi horror tackle on David Turnbull that went unpunished

Typically, it didn’t attract any post-match media attention.

A laughable claim at a foul by Kyogo Furuhashi in the build up to Celtic’s opening goal was given the full Sportscene treatment, as was a handball by Boli Bolingoli that missed the handball by Kevin van Veen just before the incident with the Celtic player.

Shortly after scoring an outstanding goal at his old stomping ground David Turnbull was subjected to the sort of brutal challenge that could have brought his season to a halt.

Taking the ball just inside the Motherwell half he moved forward with the ball under control as Bevis Mugabi moved towards him.

With the ball in his left foot the Motherwell defender scythed into the lower right leg of Turnbull, there was never any prospect of him making contact with the ball. If he had he’d need to wipe out his opponent in the process.

Replacement referee Craig Fordyce saw no foul, he waved play on. Turnbull needed treatment, thankfully he recovered and was able to complete the game.

Jeremie Frimpong was the subject of similar challenges last season at Fir Park and Ibrox, when the January transfer window came along he moved to Bundesliga where referees are more likely to apply the Laws of the Game to provide protection to players.

Mugabi picked a yellow card in the third minute of stoppage time.
