Steven Gerrard has chucked Alfredo Morelos under the bus as he deflects attention away from his side’s indifferent start to the season.

Despite a very generous run of fixtures in the SPFL the Ibrox side are just one point clear at the top of the Premiership while Europe has been a disaster- littered with defeats, red cards and players being withheld from away fixtures.

Morelos returned too late to face Malmo in the first leg Champions League qualifier then celebrated his goal in the return leg on social media as his club lost £40m on a 4-2 aggregate defeat to the Swedes.

The Colombian has been the main reason for the level of success that Gerrard has enjoyed with Kemar Roofe, Fashio Sakala, Jermain Defoe and Cedric Itten failing to deliver the same level of goals as the chunky former HJK Helsinki starlet.

Morelos was off form against Hearts on Saturday, at today’s media conference he was singled out for criticism by his manager as The Sun reported:

Five in 15 is not enough for me. Not just from him, I think we need to score more goals. All our strikers.

We are at Rangers here, the chances that we are creating I would expect the guy who has played the majority of the minutes as a number nine to have more than five in 15.  They are stats that we need to improve on moving forward.

We have to keep providing the service and the chances for Alfredo to get more goals.  But if you look at previous number nines and also Alfredo’s record in other seasons, it has been better than five in 15.

I am sure Alfredo himself, and certainly myself and the coaching staff and our attacking unit in terms of our number nines, we want to get more goals.

Over eight transfer windows there hasn’t been a single bid put in for Morelos who will only leave Ibrox if an offer in Dembele Dollars arrives. His contract runs until June 2023.

A year ago the behind-closed-doors champions were unbeaten, this season they have lost to Malmo twice, Dundee United, Lyon and Sparta Prague.
