A brilliant shot from Ben Wylie gave Celtic’s B team three well deserved points against Gretna 08 at Airdrie on Saturday.

The Irish midfielder had come close to scoring on three occasions before his 74th minute goal but the exercise in patience paid off with a well constructed and executed goal.

Frankie Deane did well to win the ball back 30 yards from goal, he fed it to Wylie who quickly exchanged passes with Tseonelo Letsosa then clipped in a perfect 22 yard effort that struck the underside of the bar before crossing the line.

Wylie certainly enjoyed the moment as he raced away to celebrate as Gretna’s stubborn resistance was finally broken.

GOAL 3 MINUTES 35 SECONDS

The Borders side had lost 11 of their 15 matches and made their intentions to defend in depth clear from the first whistle.

Five or six players were strung along the 18 yard line, sometimes they had a token striker or just defended with a 5-5 or a 6-4.

It was tough going for the young Celts but with a fortnight till their next match away to Cumbernauld Colts they’ll be pleased to have got a win with a very young side missing a few regulars away on international duty.

Earlier this year Wylie played 17 matches on loan at Ballymena United.
