A Celtic fan has turned to Subbuteo to pay tribute to the Lisbon Lions.

Based on the famous image of the team, led by Billy McNeill, walking out in the Portuguese sunshine the traditional Subbuteo figures have been adapted to match each of the players involved.

Ronnie Simpson is there with his bold green keeper’s jersey, McNeill’s proud stance and golden hair stands out while the unmistakeable figure of Jimmy Johnstone is ducking and diving away from Italian limbs.

At the front of the video is the boss, Jock Stein holding the trophy closely similar to the image of him stepping off the bus on Kerrydale Street the following day.

More than 50 years on the Lions are as celebrated as ever, with each passing year and anniversary the achievements of a group drawn exclusively from the west of Scotland shows no sign of dimming, if anything it increases.

Celtic history is rich but that afternoon in Lisbon set the standard for every team across Europe to aspire to, putting the club of Irish origin playing in Scotland on the football map like no other 90 minutes in the history of the game.
