We haven’t spent a penny- Gerrard lies as he turns on Ibrox money men

Steven Gerrard has gone public about his lack of transfer funds, claiming that Sevco haven’t spent a penny in the last two transfer windows.

That claim is incorrect with fees paid to Aberdeen and Bournemouth in January for Scott Wright and Jack Simpson. It is believed that a token fee was paid for Juninho Bacuna from Huddersfield this summer with Transfermarkt claiming that it cost £2m to bring the midfielder to Ibrox.

John Lundstram was signed as a free agent with his annual salary likely to be in excess of the first team wage bill at most SPFL clubs.

Last summer Gerrard spent £10m on Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Ianis Hagi but with the magic money tree no longer producing the goods he has fired a warning shot to fans with a spotlight put on Douglas Park and Stewart Robertson.

At this level, which is improving year in year out, if we want to keep growing and go to the extra level we need in transfer windows to spend big money.

It is as simple as that. To compete with the teams that we are playing against we have to spend big money. In the last two windows we haven’t spent a penny. So there has to be some realism there as well.

To compete with these teams and beat them on their own patch when transfer windows are open you have to spend money to compete at this level. Not win but just to compete so there has to be some common sense when you judge us from the outside.

This year Gerrard has watched his side lose at Ibrox to Slavia Prague, Malmo and Lyon. Glen Kamara will miss the Europa League match away to Brondby as he serves his second UEFA suspension of the season following last night’s sending off against Sparta Prague.
