Eddie Howe has spoken for the first time about his links to the Celtic job.

Soon after Neil Lennon resigned at the end of February it was assumed that the former Bournemouth boss would be coming in as his replacement.

The delay in the appointment or even an announcement seemed suspicious but the message from trusted sources was that the club was relaxed over the likely appointment.

Speculation centred on who might be part of Howe’s backroom staff with former Scotland midfielder Richard Hughes being touted for a Director of Football.

Howe remained on the payroll at Bournemouth as they pushed for a return to the EPL and a likely bonus. When Brentford ended that hope in the Play Off semi-final a Celtic announcement was expected, it never came.

Covering Howe’s introduction at Newcastle today, the Daily Record reports the former Bournemouth boss saying:

The problem is that I didn’t change my mind at the last minute. I have not spoken publicly on it because there have been a lot of things said that have been totally untrue.

I couldn’t get my backroom team together to go to Celtic for a host of different reasons. I didn’t want to take a job of such size, and knowing the job needing to be done, on my own.

I knew what was needed. So there was no change of mind, I was open and honest with everyone connected with the club.

Celtic were absolutely brilliant and I was open and honest all the way through. No problems with Celtic whatsoever.

Howe left Bournemouth on 1 August 2020, at today’s media conference he made it clear that he was taking a year out of football.

Strangely Celtic felt the need to comment on speculation, making a statement before they turned their attention to Ange Postecoglou. On May 28 they stated:

Following very positive and detailed discussions with Eddie Howe, with the belief that he would be an excellent candidate for the position of Celtic Manager, we allowed time for the process, given he’d previously made it clear he was not looking to return to management until this summer at the earliest.

We can now confirm that Eddie will not be joining the Club, for reasons outwith both his and Celtic’s control. We wish Eddie success for the future.

As part of the ongoing process we have engaged with a number of candidates. We fully appreciate our fans will be seeking clarity on this matter and we aim, very shortly, to announce the appointment of a Manager with the quality and desire to take Celtic forward and bring further success to our supporters.
