Gavin Strachan appears to have turned down the chance to return to Hartlepool as first team manager.

The 42-year-old spent four years playing for Hartlepool, the longest spell at the one club in a career that saw him play for eight English sides as well as loan stints at Dundee and Motherwell.

Strachan replaced Damien Duff as first team coach at Celtic in the summer of 2020- just in time to be part of the disastrous season under Neil Lennon. When Lennon was forced to self-isolate Strachan led the team to home draws with Hibs and Livingston.

Ange Postecoglou has left his backroom staff unaltered but it seems that Strachan’s contribution has been noticed elsewhere.

At lunchtime today The Hartlepool Mail reported:

Strachan followed Ferguson once more back to Peterborough in 2018 where he spent two years before moving to Scottish giants Celtic as first team coach in the summer of 2020.

Strachan remained in his role with the Glasgow club following the dismissal of Neil Lennon after the Hoops failed to secure the Scottish Premiership title last season.

But now the former Pools midfielder has become the odds-on favourite to take over from Dave Challinor who left for Stockport four weeks ago.

According to Nixon the odd-on favourite at lunchtime has ruled himself out of a return to frontline management. As something of a transfer guru Nixon knows the lower divisions very well and broke the news that Strachan was Celtic-bound in 2020.

After assisting Darren Ferguson at Doncaster and Peterborough it appears that Strachan is concentrating on coaching rather than waiting on the chance to return to management.

Although Hartlepool are in League Two the chance to manage within the Football League doesn’t come along often but it seems that remaining at Celtic has more appeal.
