English media go strong on Gerrard to Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard is being reported as a serious contender for the job of managing Aston Villa by the English media.

Following five successive defeats the Axe fell on homegrown Dean Smith following three eventful years at Villa- leading them to promotion from the Championship and developing Jack Grealish into a £100m transfer fee.

Adding a touch of glamour with a manager from the so-called Golden Generation of English footballers will carry appeal to the Villa owners while Gerrard comes to terms with life at Ibrox without loans coming in to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.

With his wife and kids refusing to leave their Merseyside base a move to Birmingham may be in the interests of all parties with some compensation welcomed at Ibrox.

The Daily Mail reports:

Steven Gerrard is high on Aston Villa’s list of possible targets after Dean Smith was sacked on Sunday.

Smith’s reign was brought to an end after five successive defeats, the latest of which was at Southampton on Friday. He leaves with Villa 15th in the table.

More managers have been sacked in the Premier League already this season – five – than the entirety of last season and the search is underway at Villa for a new boss.

Gerrard is admired by key figures in the Villa hierarchy, who are impressed by the job he has done at Rangers

Gerrard is admired by key figures in the Villa hierarchy, who are impressed by the job he has done at Rangers. The former Liverpool and England captain is under contract at Ibrox until 2024.

Unlike Morelos to Porto, Tavernier to Manchester United and Roma swooping for Hagi there could be some substance to Gerrard being linked with Villa.

Gary McAllister was caretaker manager to Gerard Houllier a Aston Villa and also had a stint as caretaker boss at the club.
