The trashing of Steven Gerrard is well underway.

A week ago Mister Gerrard was the hottest ticket in football management, the legend that had turned down Newcastle United to deliver the trophies and dreams of mullyins at Ibrox.

He shed tears for Walter Smith, wore a poppy at the end of October, on Sunday he laid a wreath at a statue to a failed manager as hundreds gathered around in hushed respect before the thrill of a pre-match cannon. Gerrard had became one of their own.

After a train trip from Liverpool to London he became the Scouse Snake.

The penny has dropped with some Ibrox fans, others refuse to believe the reality being played out in front of their eyes. The England legend that made their tribute act relevant had upped sticks in broad daylight for the dubious delights of relegation battles in the EPL.

Gerrard’s many failures are now being revived. Last season there was cup defeats to St Johnstone and St Mirren, prior to that he had lost out to Neil Lennon’s Celtic and a Hearts team heading for relegation with just four wins from 30 SPFL matches. In his first season Derek McInnes outsmarted him in both cup competitions.

Bigger than all of that was the failure to beat Malmo in August, defeats home and away. The Swedes have a history of causing carnage to clubs from Ibrox, Gerrard’s hasty exit might not be the last consequence of that glorious night where 10 Swedes killed a dream, or a Business Plan as history may prove.
