It had to happen, it was just too much for Chris Sutton to resist.

For the last couple of years he has had to listen to the Ibrox cheerleaders in the media spouting about how happy Steven Gerrard was with all things Ibrox.

Ally McCoist has been the ringleader, taking over from Derek Johnstone as the Master of Delusion.

Newcastle never stood a chance, why would Mister Gerrard want to move to Spurs. Arsenal won’t interest him, only Liverpool could wrestle him away from his True Blue heaven.

Aston Villa were barely worth a reply, on October 21 Emma Dodds of BT Sport was ticked off about asking silly questions.

Tonight the question isn’t quite so silly, last month with Newcastle speculation at a peak Sutton warned that Gerrard would be a popular choice to replace Dean Smith at Aston Villa. On Sunday the axe fell on the Villa fan in the dug-out.

The Telegraph announced at tea-time that Villa had been given permission to speak to Gerrard, the manager and five coaches will cost just £3m in compensation.

The cheerleaders have been keeping a low profile today, some of them might be updating their CV for an unexpected vacancy.
