Ange Postecoglou has already developed a cult following for his unconventional media conferences.

The Celtic boss is the archetypical straight-talking Aussie, capable of stringing sentences together without drawing on cliches and buzzwords.

One trait that has been picked up by his watchers is the use of the word mate- which can feature in two very different contexts. Mainly it is used in condemnation at an inappropriate or poorly thought out question, occasionally it is heard in a friendly endearing manner. Today was one of those times.

After an update about injuries and players returning from international duty the Celtic boss was posed with a question that brought out the very best in him.

Just on the international stuff Ange, how pleasing is it for you to sit back as the Celtic manager and watch so many of your players, you know do so well on the international scene.

How does that transcend into this game, hopefully carry that momentum into the St Johnstone match.

It’s bloody stressful mate. Cos, em, I’m wishing that they do well but sort of fingers crossed that nothing happens to them from a physical perspective. Look I’ve always said that it’s a positive thing, we’ve got Josip Juranovic qualified for the World Cup, so we’ve got one Celtic player who’ll be there next year, hopefully he’s joined by his Scotland counterparts, if they get through the next phase which would be great.

And also Tommy and Kyogo with their respective nations, I’ve always seen the national team stuff, obviously I’ve seen the national team stuff, I think that it does add to a players belief and confidence when they are playing at the biggest possible stage.

Tony Ralston, David Turnbull and Callum McGregor were all involved in the Scotland squad that qualified for the World Cup play-offs with James Forrest and Greg Taylor missing through injury.

From Saturday Postecoglou will need to dig deep into his squad with Celtic facing 12 matches in the 42 days upto the January 2 Glasgow derby.

Scotland has always needed the best Celtic players, so that they can be scapegoats when things go wrong.

  • Andrew Morrison says:

All Celtic fans know that in the eyes of UEFA they will always find something to punish us with weather its against the team or the fans and punish the club by means of a heavy fine and no wonder the fans let their feelings be known at games. ???
