Kenny Miller backs Kevin Clancy in Aberdeen penalty call

Kenny Miller has backed Kevin Clancy’s decision to award Aberdeen a penalty at Celtic Park today.

With 33 minutes played David Bates took a heavy touch in the box and raced towards Liel Abada for a second touch.

Sensing what may happen the Celtic player opted out of putting in a tackle but Bates careered into Abada on his way to the ground.

Standing close to the incident referee Clancy pointed to the penalty spot to give Aberdeen the chance to draw level, Lewis Ferguson converted past Joe Hart.

Miller watched the action of Sportscene with the Daily Record picking up on his comments:

I would be raging if I wasn’t given it to be honest. There is contact. I know the defender has not initiated the contact, but as David Bates is running through both left legs collide.

There is 100 per cent contact there, and I think it is a penalty. It’s probably soft, but there has been contact, and obviously Lewis Ferguson stepped up with a calm and composed penalty

Jota had opened the scoring for Celtic in the 20th minute but the penalty knocked Celtic back just as they were threatening to extend their lead.

On the hour mark a Jonny Hayes clearance flew off Callum McGregor into the net for what turned out to be the winning goal.
