Davie Provan has suggested that Barry Ferguson should be part of the next management team at Ibrox with Steven Gerrard’s departure almost a formality.

The former Liverpool captain is expected to take five coaches with him leaving just Jermain Defoe (on a playing contract) and Graeme Murty to look after a disillusioned playing squad.

On a good day Ferguson’s managerial record could be described as average covering time in charge of Clyde, Kelty Hearts and now Alloa Athletic where he recently clashed with fans after a draw at Dumbarton.

If Steven Gerrard is being linked with the Liverpool job then I think that Barry’s standing amongst Rangers supporters is very similar.

I wouldn’t see why not at all. Maybe as a partnership? I don’t know how, I’m putting Barry on the spot here- if your phone went tonight you’d take the job obviously? Would you want somebody in alongside you, would you have your own coaching team in mind right now, how would that go?

FERGUSON REPLIED:

I will be honest with you Davie, I’ve not even thought about it but you would want somebody in. I would want somebody with experience if you did get offered the job or if you did come into the thoughts of people. It is just when you get that call you need to make decisions quickly. Listen, what a job that will be for somebody.

Later Provan added:

Look I’m not here to promote Barry but what I would say is, that, Barry’s apprenticeship in management, you could argue is greater than what Steven Gerrard had served as a Liverpool youth coach. So, I think that Barry would have to be in the frame, I’m not sparing his modesty, he would have to be in the frame.

In 19 matches at Alloa Ferguson has a record of seven wins, four draws and eight defeats in League One, at Clyde in League Two he managed 46 wins, 23 draws and 51 defeats over three years.

Alloa are currently sixth in League One, Ferguson has been assisted by Boab Malcolm in his three management jobs.
