You’ll get nowhere- Former Celt delivers wake-up call to Ange

Pat Bonner watched an old familiar movie last night as Celtic crashed out of the Europa League following a 3-2 defeat from Bayer Leverkusen.

With 80 minutes on the clock Ange Postecoglou’s side were closing in on a famous victory and a Matchday 6 show-down at home to Real Betis.

After six minutes of stoppage time it was time to study the Europa Conference and take comfort from scoring eight goals on the road across Germany, Spain and Hungary.

This season’s campaign is night and day from last season’s horrors but everyone inside the game knows that you’ll not make progress shipping three goals per game.

On Radio Scotland Bonner warned:

You can talk all about the good work all you want, but if you can’t keep the ball out of the net, then you’ll get nowhere. The attacking football is great to watch but defensively it’s just as important.

Celtic’s attacking edge will always leave their defence vulnerable, solving the issues at the back without taking too much away from their attacking instincts is the conundrum that Postecoglou has to resolve.

Domestically it shouldn’t be too much of an issue but European opponents pose a far more clinical test.
