Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Giorgos Giakoumakis is still a couple of weeks away from playing meaning that the striker won’t play again this year.

Celtic spent around £2.5m to bring in the striker from VVV Venlo just as the transfer window was closing with Odsonne Edouard on his way to Crystal Palace.

It almost seemed too good to be true to be signing the top scorer from the Eredivisie for that sort of fee but four months later Giakoumakis has only started two matches and contributed one goal.

The 27-year-old hasn’t played since he made a half hour appearance off the bench away to Dundee on November 7 with no prospect of a quick-fire return to action.

The Daily Record reports Postecoglou saying:

James had an issue and we’re still waiting on information on that. We’re assessing Mikey Johnston. He had a slight issue.

Giakoumakis is still a couple of weeks. Forrest and Kyogo, we are just going to have to wait and assess them. They are ruled out of Wednesday. That’s all I can rule them out of at the moment and we’ll see how the week goes.

Celtic have got six more matches to get through until the winter break begins on January 2 with Kyogo looking like the only striker option available to Postecoglou at a pivotal stage of the season.

Celtic had problems before at the time of Mjalby and Bob. Have them on the pitch before each game with the physio stretching their hamstrings before the match.
