Ryan Porteous is banned from facing Celtic in the first match of 2022.

Last week the defender scored the only goal of the game in the win over Aberdeen but today he was up in front of the SFA after escaping punishment for an incident involving Dons striker Christian Ramirez.

It seemed a fairly cut and dried case for the SFA to review with the Hibs website reporting:

The defender, who scored the winning goal in the game, has been penalised for an incident involving Christian Ramirez.  The incident was reviewed by the SFA and has seen Porteous receive a punishment of a three-match ban.

That means the defender will miss our next three games; Celtic on Monday 17 January, Cove Rangers on Thursday 20 January, and Motherwell on Wednesday 26 January.

It seems strange that the Porteous will miss a Scottish Cup tie for an incident in an SPFL fixture.

Earlier this season at Ibrox the Hibs defender received a first half red card then picked up a yellow in his first game back for a dangerous lunge at Callum McGregor.

The game against Aberdeen was Shaun Maloney’s first as Hibs manager with that win followed up on Saturday with a 3-1 win away to Dundee United.

Maloney enjoyed two playing spells at Celtic and also coached the reserves, when he returns in the away dug-out on January 17 he will be looking at a reshaped defence with Paul McGinn facing an SFA hearing on January 13 for comments about John Beaton at the League Cup Final.
