‘Cherry picking at its finest. Disgracefull’ ‘you’ve had a bit of a nightmare here’ ‘Seems very strange’ Spiers taken to task over Cup Final claim

Celtic fans have taken Graham Spiers to task over his concerns about the League Cup Final going ahead at Hampden on Sunday.

A decade or so again Spiers was one of the most high profile journalists on the Scottish football scene but these days he makes a few appearances a week in The Times (Scotland) while promoting his own podcast.

The match at Hampden falls 24 hours after Dundee United visit Ibrox but that gathering of 50,000 fans seems to have escaped Spiers’ attention and concern.

A year ago Hampden was empty of fans as Celtic completed their fourth successive treble with celebrations severely muted as they were when St Johnstone went on to lift two trophies.

Concerns about the pandemic have risen over the last few weeks but it seems fairly well established that being out in the open air is less of a threat to health than being indoors.

All across Scotland people will be on buses and trains, even airplanes. They will be in shops and shopping centres but it seems that Hampden Park on Sunday has been singled out for concern by some.
