Graham Alexander dipped into the Robbie Neilson Book of Management Excuses to explain his side’s defeat from Celtic.

The Motherwell boss didn’t try the Glasgow line but made sure he got in a few digs about the lead up to Celtic’s decisive goal.

For added impact he got booked on the touchline as he complained about the award of a free kick at the side of the penalty box that allowed him to have his entire team inside a 10 yard radius of the goal-line.

Picking up on his post-match interview with Radio Scotland, the Daily Record reports Alexander saying:

It’s galling to lose a goal at that point. I thought it was a really cheap decision, the free-kick. Those challenges go on all over the pitch and it’ll be stop-start if you give every one of them.

What happened next should be of more concern to the Motherwell manager. Callum McGregor’s run from the edge of the penalty box seemed to take the attention of half of his players.

The Celtic skipper never touched the ball but Tom Rogic did, steering the ball firmly into the top of the net to give the homeside a much needed lift going into the half-time break.

Alexander had 45 minutes to come up with a reply to that goal, his team had a few little spells of possession but barely tested Joe Hart in the Celtic goal.

2 minutes in free kick

  • Charlie Kelly says:

Motherwell should count themselves fortunate not too have more players ordered off or booked most of the team leave something in at nearly every tackle and there number 5 should have been off for various tackles if referee have been more competent instead of just breaking up play when celtic attacked it should have been at least 3nil
