Frank McAvennie’s judgement has always been questionable.

Ten months after playing a key role in Celtic’s Centenary Double success the bright lights of London were calling too strongly on the striker.

Weekends in the big smoke ended with a Monday morning shuttle to Glasgow Airport and a taxi to Barrafield under the watchful eye of Billy McNeil.

George Graham wanted to take him to his emerging Arsenal side that dramatically won the title on the final day of the 1989 season but McAvennie opted for the home comforts of West Ham and a losing battle against relegation.

Last week the former Scotland striker looked in on St Mirren taking on Celtic as two of his former clubs clashed.

It wouldn’t be hard to pick fault with Celtic’s blunt display, 31 attempts on goal that rarely threatened to produce a goal against a side down to the bare bones with kids on the bench without a first team appearance to their name.

For reasons that only McAvennie will understand he opted to pin the blame on Tony Ralston, claiming that his display looked like he had just left a building site!

If Celtic had 10 other workies like Ralston they might have taken full points rather than just the one. Alongside substitute Josip Juranovic, the main threat to the St Mirren goal came down the right flank.

Does McAvennie have a valid criticism of Ralston?

Yes, we need better than Ralston

Yes, we need better than Ralston

No, we could do with more like Tony

No, we could do with more like Tony

Celtic dropped two points a week after Ralston salvaged two away to Ross County- it is unlikely that the born-again Celt will be worrying too much about the thoughts of McAvennie as he looks back on the incredible turn around his career has had in 2021.
