Shock for Gerrard as Villa testing returns positive result

Steven Gerrard has returned a positive test meaning that he will have to self-isolate while Aston Villa are in action.

The Liverpool legend will be missing from the dug-out at home to Chelsea today leaving his loyal assistant Michael Beale in charge although the Villa coach hasn’t been identified as a close contact.

Last season Gerrard led a charmed life through a pandemic, in pre-season he car shared with Beale to pre-season training without any comment from the SFA then fielded a team of untested players in a friendly match against Dundee United.

Ahead of UEFA testing at a match away to Alashkert Gerrard did return a positive test that forced him to self-isolate, now, less than two months into his new job at Villa he has returned another positive test.

Earlier this year Calvin Patterson was severely disciplined after getting caught by Police Scotland attending a house party with five Ibrox team-mates. It took the SFA two months to suspended Young Patterson who has started two SPFL matches this season.

At Anfield earlier this month Gerrard was stunned to see a penalty awarded against his side.
