For most of the early eighties Mark Reid and Roy Aitken were almost inseparable, numbers 3 and 4 on the team-sheets of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay.

To add to the bond they even car shared from Ayrshire to Celtic Park for training at Barrowfield in what was almost exclusively an all-Scottish squad with the exception of Pat Bonner.

Reid left Celtic in 1985 after making 170 appearances, going on to make a name at Charlton where he spent six years before catching up with Aitken and Hay at St Mirren.

Aitken needs little introduction, playing for Celtic while still at school in 1975 with a career spanning 15 years alongside the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Danny McGrain, Paul McStay, Frank McGarvey, Davie Provan Tommy Burns and an endless list through to the Centenary side of 1988.

Until Derek McInnes lifted the League Cup in 2014 Aitken was the last Aberdeen manager to win a trophy, picking up the 1995 League Cup despite some tousy clashes with the Dons during his playing days.

Now a Celtic Ambassador he seems to have retired from the front line after spells in coaching with Leeds United, Aston Villa and Scotland.
