Scottish football won’t have VAR for at least a year.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal against Hearts on Thursday seems to have triggered near meltdown in refereeing circles with Crawford Allan turning up on Radio Scotland to explain the circumstances of the decision. Tellingly he said that the Celtic striker was probably offside, no reference was made to the ‘goal’ by Liel Abada on the opening day of the season that was wrongly disallowed for offside.

During the summer Hampden hosted four matches at the finals of the European Championships where VAR was fully operational.

On Thursday VAR will be in use at Celtic’s Europa League tie against Real Betis, as it was for three ties at Ibrox before being switched off and removed.

Following the World Cup in Russia VAR was introduced in the EPL, in September UEFA published a report titled ‘VAR Proving its Value to Football’ but Scotland remains a backwater, refusing to get in line with the majority of UEFA nations that benefit from additional help for referees.

Covering Allan’s appearance on Sportsound, BBC Scotland reports:

VAR is highly unlikely to be introduced in Scotland in time for next season – but the country’s referees are trying “to speed it along”.

It could be implemented after the break for next year’s Qatar World Cup finals, which finish on 18 December.

The 42 senior clubs will vote on its introduction to the Premiership at a general meeting in February.

“Our desire is to bring it in as early as we can,” said Scottish FA head of referee operations Crawford Allan.

“There’s not one referee that I’ve spoken to that doesn’t want it. We’re doing what we can in the background to try to speed it along. It’s going to take a while.”

Introducing VAR in mid-season in 12 months time seems a strange move with no explanations given for the delay. VAR was used in February 2020 at the Celtic v Copenhagen Europa League last 32 tie.
