Ewan Murray was quickly corrected when he lumped Celtic into a tweet about football clubs claiming more money from the Scottish Government.

The Guardian reporter is uncomfortable with the issue after the First Minister announced that £5m in aid would be given to Sport to cover recent losses with football expected to claim around £2m.

Five Premiership clubs had to play in front of 500 fans on December 26 with Hearts deciding that it wasn’t worth the effort to have that number of fans inside Tynecastle. Lower division clubs have continued to play but 500 Season Ticket holders inside East End Park, Rugby Park or Firhill doesn’t pay many bills.

Early in 2021 the Scottish Government provided 20 year interest free loans to Premiership clubs with Celtic the only one not to take up the offer.

Quarterly cash flow statements are required as part of the terms of the loan which gives the Scottish Government very precise details of how clubs are operating.

While Season Ticket money is banked in the summer every club relies on walk-up customers buying tickets while hospitality packages are critical at every level of the game.

Fixtures over the festive period tend to be very lucrative for clubs, matches later on in January are notorious for lower attendances as fans come to terms with their December spending.

Celtic spending their own money the rangers take public money have they produced the quarterly accounts yet as required Murray just a other of the blue clan I do read the guardian but not his $hit and football clubs should not be given these type of loans they have plenty of wealthy directors and owners.

i am in no way way defending one of the gutless mob but these loans to football clubs some who pay their players thousands of pounds a week is a disgrace while at the same time people on universal credit are losing twenty pounds a week ?. why no msp has brought this up at holyrood is also a disgrace.

  • John S says:
