Liam Shaw appears to be close to joining Motherwell on loan until the end of the season.

The midfielder has made just two Celtic appearances since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in the summer with two new midfielders added to Ange Postecoglou’s squad with Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi signing up.

Shaw made 21 appearances in the Championship last season with further game time essential for the 20-year-old’s development.

There are probably clubs in the English Championship and League One interested in taking the midfielder on loan but it seems that Celtic would prefer a Scottish option.

Covering the issue, The Scotsman reports:

Celtic youngster, Liam Shaw, looks set to spend the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan with Motherwell.

Shaw has also been linked with a move to St Johnstone this month after the January transfer window opened, but it’s now understood that Motherwell are leading the loan race with a deal almost sealed to snap up the talented midfielder for the second half of the campaign.

Motherwell are currently fourth in the table after 20 games, and Shaw will no doubt be looking forward to the opportunity of playing regular football in Scotland should the deal be finalised.

Graham Alexander’s club are currently sitting in fourth place in the SPFL Premiership, five points behind Hearts and two ahead of Hibs and look to be in a strong position for a top six finish.

Part of any loan deal would prevent Shaw from playing against Celtic but he could have an influence on the title race by playing against Celtic’s closest rivals.
