Gerrard’s flop 2021 signing told that he is free to quit Ibrox

Ibrox flop Jack Simpson is wanted on loan by Middlesbrough.

Last January the Ibrox club were delighted to announce the signing of the defender on a four year contract as they planned for the possible departure of Conor Goldson.

Simpson got the full Beckenbauer treatment, comparisons with Virgil van Dijk but the reality is that he makes Harry Maguire seem agile and athletic.

Steven Gerrard was loathe to pick his own signing, leaving the former EPL star out of his Europa League squad with Giovanni van Bronckhorst also body-swerving the 25-year-old.

Utility man James Sands has been brought in on loan with The Sun revealing news of interest in Simpson:

MIDDLESBROUGH are set to offer Rangers defender Jack Simpson a route out of Ibrox. The Championship side want to take the out-of-favour 25-year-old on loan from Gers.

Boro boss Chris Wilder is an admirer of the ex-Bournemouth ace. The stopper’s career has stalled at Gers. Simpson has hardly featured since moving from the Cherries a year ago.

The England Under-21 cap has started just two games this term, and was not included in the club’s Europa League squad.

Rangers have told Simpson he is free to leave before the transfer window closes, if a suitable deal can be struck.

On February 1 the Ibrox club announced:

RANGERS Football Club are today delighted to announce the signing of defender Jack Simpson from AFC Bournemouth on a four-and-a-half year deal.

Simpson, 24, has Premier League experience with the Cherries, and this season, has played an important role in their bid to be promoted back to England’s top flight, where they sit in the play-off places, just five points off an automatic promotion slot.
