Johnny Kenny is reported to be signing for Celtic in the next few days.

The 18-year-old made a big impression in his first senior season with Sligo Rovers with his 11 goals in 33 appearances helping his side to third place in the League of Ireland.

Kenny also impressed for the Ireland u-19 squad and seemed to be on his way to joining Hibs after spending a couple of days in Edinburgh and watching their win over Dundee last month.

Celtic have been linked with the teenager since November and are reported to be about to complete his signing.

The Independent reports:

Sligo Rovers’ Johnny Kenny is expected to sign for Celtic in the coming days. Hibernian were also showing huge interest in the Republic of Ireland U19’s striker, however it is understood that Celtic are the frontrunners to get Kenny’s signature with a fee of €150,000 with potential add-ons for Rovers.

The teenager has been of massive interest since making his senior debut with Rovers last season. Kenny had been a guest at Hibs for their league game with Dundee back in December as both Hibs and Celtic battled for the striker’s signature but it’s understood Celtic have come out on top.

Where Kenny fits in at Celtic is hard to judge, the first team squad is unlikely to offer many openings in the coming months with the League of Ireland clearly superior to the Lowland League.

Perhaps a few months of intensive training at Lennoxtown mixed with Lowland League fixtures will give the Celtic coaching staff time to assess the player and decide on whether he should go out on loan next season or stays at the club as a first team prospect.
