Tentative progress reported in Celtic’s mooted £6m deal

The Daily Record is claiming that talks between Celtic and Benfica over a permanent move for Jota ‘could be close to reaching completion’. 

There is very little detail to the report such as length of contract, add-ons or the percentage that the Portuguese club will be due if the winger is sold on. 

Jota has been one of the main drivers in Celtic’s success this season, almost instantly striking up an understanding with Kyogo Furuhashi that was highlighted by the opening goal in the home win against Ferencvaros. 

The on loan winger had a difficult time last season on loan at Real Valladolid but both domestically and in Europe he has impressed with goals and assists. 

The Daily Record reports: 

Celtic have been in talks with the Portuguese winger’s parent club over the prospect of turning that arrangement into a long-term agreement with figures around £6 million mooted. 

Record Sport understands those talks have progressed well in recent days and the 22-year-old’s full-time switch could be close to reaching completion. 

Jota suffered a hamstring injury at home to Hearts on December 2 with his absence notable as Celtic struggled through last month without their creative winger. 

Making the move permanent would be a significant step forward for Ange Postecoglou with Jota’s performances in the Europa League together with his pedigree as a Portuguese youth internationalist certain to have alerted other clubs.
