According to the team at Sportscene Celtic were awarded a controversial penalty in last night’s 2-0 win over Hibs.
To the thousands of watching fans and also to match referee Willie Collum it was a very straight forward decision, the ball struck Josh Doig’s hand and a penalty was awarded.
Last night’s match was virtually free from controversy but there was plenty of football related issues for the presenters and pundits to discuss but that seemed too much like hard work as they laboured away over a penalty.
Greg Taylor delivered a brilliant diagonal ball that ultimately created the penalty. Doig suddenly found himself out of position, Liel Abada played the ball across the defender with the hand of Doig preventing Abada from getting his shot away.
Instead of getting worked up about a non-controversy viewers could have enjoyed further analysis of Reo Hatate’s impressive debut, a look at the impact that Hatate and Daizen Maeda had on Celtic’s play, what formation Ange Postecoglou’s side had used and going forward where Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi fit in.
Instead it was a ‘controversial’ penalty, except none of the commenting Celtic fans saw anything remotely dubious or questionable about the decision.
The Sportscene commentary on Celtic’s penalty last night was a shambles. Commentator said it was accidental, then the co-commentator says her first thought was penalty. Then they watched the replay showing the defender with his arm up, and both want VAR cos it was never a pen ?

If his arm didn’t prevent the ball from travelling, it would’ve fallen perfectly for a Celtic player with a scoring opportunity. Not sure how it could be considered not to be a penalty.

It was an absolute stonewall pen, the commentary on Sportscene was embarrassing…..but their hurt was blatant!

It’s an attempt to level things up, but unlike some debatable penalties, it had no bearing on the outcome of the game.

Yeah, that was the bit that got me most. They could “understand” why it was a penalty because the guy had his arm out and hit the ball with it. No discussion of what happens if he doesn’t handle it which is probably it drops to Abada for a great chance to score

It was the exact same thing that gappe Ed at ibrox v dundee Utd and the sportscene commentators said it was a sert penalty
