They’ve made a hash of it- Hugh Keevins’ classic 80th minute verdict on struggling Celtic

Hugh Keevins was in his absolute pomp yesterday as he excitedly predicted doom and gloom for Celtic- he went as far as to say that they had made a hash of it.

The veteran broadcaster does know a thing or two about making a hash of things, on the first SPFL day of the season he tipped Celtic to finish in third place in the Premiership while Paul Hanlon’s goal in the League Cup Final was announced as the only goal of the game with 60 seconds between the Hibs opener and Kyogo Furuhashi equalising.

At every opportunity it seems like Celtic are on the verge of disaster while the smooth running machine across the city powers its way to further glory.

When it comes to dramatic finishes there are few clubs that can compare with Celtic, successive managers have turned it into an art form, the last minute winner, the goal against the odds that can turn a match or even a title race.

After a decent first half against Dundee United the hoops were toiling as the second half developed. Benji Siegrist in the United goal was in inspired form, most of the Celtic attackers were short of their best.

Excitement was mounting in the Radio Clyde studio with Keevins dusting out his favourite ‘I told you so lines.

Hugh Keevins: I’d be wary of Dundee United in the last 10 minutes

After laughs in the studio.

HK: I never said they would score I just said that I’d be wary of Dundee United but this says, unless Celtic score they have shot themselves in the foot. The Celtic fans cannot be happy. They go into the Rangers match in a far different frame of mind than they would have done had they scored. If they don’t score a goal this goes down as a very, very bad day.

Gordon Duncan: Oh ho ho ho ho ho ho, and it’s just got tougher because Nir Bitton has got sent off, a second booking, Gordon Dalziel felt that he should have had one during the week- well he’s got one this afternoon and Celtic are down to 10 men.

HK: And he’s out of the Rangers game. The captain, the stand-in captain is out of the Rangers game.

GD: Not necessarily for two bookings, is that straight away? I’m not sure, anyway Fraser (Wishart) will tell us

Mark Wilson: Never mind the Rangers game it’s the last 10 minutes here. Celtic needed, you know every player, Bitton, an important part of that, pick those passes and even just shore up things in that midfield and he’s off. You know, booked earlier on, what is he thinking, almost like a rugby tackle from behind and he looks shocked! I don’t know why.

HK: You know he’s only playing to the gallery with all that stuff. Trying to get himself off the hook. He’d be as well trying to get himself off the park because he’s only becoming a bigger and bigger distraction.

GD: Yeah, you’re right Hugh, suspended for Wednesday.

HK So Joe Hart will probably be the captain but it is part of what is turning out to be a bad day for Celtic. They were handed every incentive when Rangers draw in Dingwall and they have made a hash of it.
