Alfredo Morelos is being linked with a surprise international recall.
Last summer the chunky Ibrox striker was part of the Colombian squad at the Copa America but only managed to play for nine minutes over the course of seven matches.
That was enough to delay his return to Ibrox for pre-season training, at one stage Steven Gerrard said he had no idea when the striker would be back in Scotland with Morelos missing the Champions League qualifier away to Malmo while Kemar Roofe was suspended.
Morelos hasn’t been involved in the Colombian national squad this season but according to The Sun that could be about to change:
The 25-year-old has been previously cast into the international wilderness by Rueda (Colombian boss Reinaldo), who appeared not to rate him after he was almost ignored during the Copa America summer tournament.
Morelos played just nine minutes of Colombia’s seven games in the Brazil tournament and hasn’t been seen since in subsequent World Cup qualifiers.
Colombia even picked NINE strikers in their squad ahead of him for their November qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay.
They face a crucial double-header against Peru on January 28th and Argentina on February 1 – just hours before the second Old Firm clash of the season in Glasgow.
They are currently locked in fourth place with Peru, with Chile and Uruguay a point behind. Only the top four qualify for Qatar 2022.
However, Colombia look certain to be without Atalanta star Duvan Zapata, who is expected to be out for several weeks with a stomach injury and that looks set to open the door for Morelos.
With Joe Aribo currently at the African Nations Cup, Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be without two key players for vital SPFL matches while Ross Wilson attempts to bring in undisclosed fees to make ends meet.
If a club has three players on international duty they can request a postponement from the SPFL.
