Celtic have recalled Jonathan Afolabi from his loan deal with Ayr United and sent him instantly to League One Airdrie.

The striker was signed to some fanfare in 2019 after leaving Southampton but while Jeremie Frimpong’s career took off Afolabi fell by the wayside in much the same manner as Luca Connell and Lee O’Connor.

With no real competitive action below first team level Afolabi made a few appearances on loan for Dunfermline before lockdown then spent last season on loan at Dundee.

Despite joining Ange Postecoglou’s squad for pre-season training in Wales a breakthrough at Celtic looked unlikely.

David Hopkin took the striker to Ayr United, the former Livingston boss was soon replaced by his assistant Jim Duffy who lasted 17 matches with Lee Bullen now in charge at Somerset Park.

Now his future lies down a division with Airdrie who had Kerr McInroy on loan from Celtic in the first half of the season with the midfielder now at Ayr United!

With Ayr Afolabi made six starts, 10 substitute appearances and scored one goal.
