BBC Scotland have apologised to Celtic over the offensive tweet last Friday from their chief sports writer, Tom English.

News of Shane Warne’s death at the age of 52 had barely sunk in when English decided that Celtic’s condolences were crass.

Crass would be one of the mildest terms that could be used about English and his tweet, commenting on any death is a very delicate matter and one best avoided if you have no sympathy or respect to express.

Celtic fans and others were quick to call English out for his crass comments, it was a step too far from someone who is naturally hostile to most issues involving Celtic or Celtic fans.

Complaints were made directly to the British Broadcasting Corporation, a week later they have responded to the tweet from their chief sports writer.

On their corrections page today they announced.

On Friday 4 March, our Chief Sports Writer posted a tweet, relating to Celtic Football Club’s statement on the death of Shane Warne, that did not meet our editorial standards. The tweet has been removed and we have apologised to the club for this lapse.

English hasn’t made any apology for his tweet. No comment has been broadcast by BBC Scotland about the tweet or the instruction to have it deleted.
