Sssssh- a light is shone on the well disguised Ibrox cup record

There can hardly be a visitor to Scotland this year that wasn’t aware that going into last weekend Celtic hadn’t won at Livingston since 2007.

Brendan Rodgers, Neil Lennon and Ange Postecoglou had all failed at the Toni Macaroni, those defeats and draws were covered in great detail until the hoops won 3-1 to restore their three point lead at the top of the Premiership with just eight matches left to play.

Basking in the glow of their latest European triumph you’ll be hard pushed to find details about Sevco’s domestic cup record, it’s not a subject for Ally McCoist to crack gags about.

Dundee United regularly caused McCoist grief in cup competitions but so too did Forfar and Inverness Caley Thistle before gardening leave came calling.

A generation of primary school children have grown used to watching Celtic utterly dominate cup competitions, picking up seven out of the nine cups on offer since the Tribute Act reached the top division in 2016.

Showing unexpected attention to the lack of cup success at Ibrox for both the old club and the Tribute Act, The Sun reports:

While the Gers’ financial troubles in the last decade are well-documented, it still seems remarkable that they have entered ELEVEN Scottish League Cups and ELEVEN Scottish Cups since then without ending up with silverware.

The Gers, of course, had the small matter of landing their first top flight league title in a decade last summer.

But it’s a different matter in the cup competitions where NINE other teams have landed silverware since they last got their hands on it. And historic rivals Celtic have landed no fewer than TWELVE sets of winners’ medals.

As well as Celtic the following teams have lifted cups in the last decade- Aberdeen, St Mirren, Hearts, Hibs, Ross County, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock as well as serial winners St Johnstone.

Mark Warburton, Ally McCoist, Kenny McDowall, Pedro Caixinha, David McMillan, Graeme Murty and Steven Gerrard all flopped in the cup competitions although Warbo and Mister Gerrard both reached finals before finding themselves out of their depth.

On Sunday Giovanni van Bronckhorst takes his European heroes to Dundee for a Scottish Cup tie against the side sitting in bottom place in the SPFL Premiership.
