As a means of raising his profile Nick McPheat’s incredible profile of James Tavernier certainly ticked the boxes.
The aspiring BBC Scotland reporter may pass himself off as a Motherwell fan but appears to be follow-following a long list of employees at the state broadcaster adopting a diddy team to cover their true affections.
Wednesday’s Tav tribute deserves a place in Scottish Football’s Museum of Succulent Lamb, in honour of James Traynor and the gushing commentaries of Dave Murray down the years.
Paying homage to his business deals, his wealth, vineyards, business empire, daring transfer deals for Ronaldo and Luca Vialli would be littered with glowing references to the Rangers chairman who sold the club for £1 to Craig Whyte 13 months before the liquidators moved in.
McPheat managed to cover very similar ground, delving into the depths of League Two in the EFL to get the gobby Steve Evans to discuss the raft of top flight managers who’ve contacted him for a reference on Tav’s incredible loan spell at Rotherham in 2013.
With less than 300 Twitter followers McPheat still has a long way to go to join English, Macintyre and Lamont at the top table of BBC Scotland but he has certainly served notice of his ambitions.
Ach don’t let it keep you up too late mate. I’ll make sure I get someone to say Ange is good enough to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle for my next one
