Leigh Griffiths answers cocaine rumours

Leigh Griffiths has hit back at the social media claims about his personal life including rumours that he has used cocaine.

The striker was given a 12 month contract by Celtic at the start of July but has been shipped out on loan to Dundee and Falkirk after being cut adrift by Ange Postecoglou.

Some fans will still claim that Griffiths is one of the best strikers in Scotland but five goals in 26 appearances this season tell a different story.

In Celtic’s final match before Lockdown Griffiths scored a hat-trick against St Mirren but since then his career has been on a sharp downhill spiral.

Speaking to the Daily Record he said:

I hear some of the stories which have been doing the rounds about me. Some of them are so ridiculous and I wonder where they come from. I remember when I was off work in 2019 and some of the stories I heard about myself and my kids would hear were unbelievable.

Some were worse than others but there was one that I was taking cocaine. They have pictures about everything these days, surely if I was taking cocaine someone would have put up a picture of that.  It’s just more of this false perception which I get.

Social media is one of the best things which has happened but it’s also one of the worst. It provides a platform for people to say exactly what they want without any repercussions.

Two of my kids are about to turn eleven years-old and one of them has been getting a bit of abuse at school about what happened with me last summer. Her mum has told her to try and ignore it .

If I had a pound for every message of abuse I’ve read about myself then I’d be lying on a beach somewhere set up for life.

Following Lockdown Griffiths was left out of Celtic’s pre-season plan at Loughborough and France but fought his way back into the Scotland squad that qualified for the finals of the European Championships by beating Serbia in a penalty shoot-out with the former Hibs striker scoring from the penalty spot.

A new contract from Celtic proved to be a false dawn, after three goals on loan at Dundee that loan was cut short, today he was in the Falkirk side that lost 2-0 to Cove Rangers to kill off their hopes of a Play-Off place with three matches left in the League One campaign.
