Liverpool standard but why still in Scotland? BBC Scotland investigates the James Tavernier Mystery

In a report that would have passed the Succulent Lamb test at the height of the Murray Years BBC Scotland has been investigating why Liverpool or Manchester City haven’t swooped for James Tavernier.

It seems that a run of penalties and some goals against SPFL clubs has blind-sided Nick McPeat- or he simply wants to climb the promotion ladder inside BBC Scotland’s Sports Department.

Tav is a decent English Championship level full-back, impressive going forward and very suspect up against a direct opponents.

McPeat turns to Stevenage boss Steve Evans and Mark Warburton to get to the root of the Tav Mystery while failing to grasp some very important faces.

Seven loan spells at clubs like Carlisle, MK Dons and Shrewsbury mean that the Ibrox defender is well known south of the border. Journey-man is as good as it gets.

If at any stage an EPL club wanted a defender that struggles to defend they could have snapped up the 30-year-old who moved to Ibrox from Wigan in 2015.

One trophy win out of 19 during his time in Scotland is nothing to get excited about- unless you are at BBC Scotland with boxes to tick as you aspire to be the next Tom English, Kenny Macintyre or Alasdair Lamont.
