Only in Scotland- watch the incredible error by Grant Irvine who denied Aberdeen a penalty and Livingston a clear red card

Newcomer Grant Irvine showed how poor the standard of refereeing is at yesterday’s match between Aberdeen and Livingston.

The Pittodrie match was his ninth Premiership match of the season but so far he hasn’t been appointed for a match involving either Glasgow club.

Bobby Madden lowered the benchmark at Hampden last Sunday with his treatment of John Lundstram the ‘highlight’ of a performance that could best be described as puzzling.

At Pittodrie Irvine watched Max Stryjek collect a cross then move towards the edge of his box before knocking Vicente Besuijen over before clearing the ball.

The Dons forward was completely innocent but rather than award Aberdeen a penalty and send Stryjek off, referee Irvine opted to book both players.

Irvine is clearly one to watch, in 2019 he was happy to support Specsavers in their sponsorship of Scottish referees.

Kevin Clancy will referee today’s match between Ross County and Celtic.
